Manufacturing, Banking, Sectors Make Significant Gains On Stocks Market

Accra,(Greater Accra Region) 15 Oct. Activities in the manufacturing, trading and banking sectors have for the second year running, continued to make significant gains on the Stock Market. Market Statistics for September issued by the Ghana Stock Exchange in Accra said today the sectors posted high gains compared to other listed equities. Another area where the sectors excelled was gains in share price, indicating high investor interest in industry. Mechanical Llloyd's Company (MLC) topped the list making a gain of 252.8 per cent in September compared with 220.8 per cent in August this year. The equity registered a significant price change per share, rising from 53 cedis in September last year to 187 cedis in September this year. Pioneer Tobacco Company (PTC) Limited gained 184.2 per cent compared to 148.1 per cent cedis posted in August. The share price of PTC, with 60 million issued shares and a 22.68 billion cedis capitalisation, was 378 cedis in September this year compared with 124 cedis September 1996. UTC Estates (UTC-E) which made a gain of 110 per cent saw a 50 per cent rise in share price from 60 cedis last September to 105 cedis last month. Social Security Bank (SSB) which gained 51.4 per cent and saw its share price increase from 1,057 cedis in September last year to 1,600 cedis at the end of trading in September, 1997.
