The Executive Chairman of McDan Group Dr. Daniel Mckorley has revealed that they are working to expand their operations into the Caribbean before the end of the year.
He explained that the move has been influenced by plans to expand into new markets to help the group absorb shocks going forward.
He hinted that the Group is likely to choose Grenada as the base to expand to other countries in the region.
He disclosed this to JOYBUSINESS after a high level meeting with the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Thomas Mitchell on the sidelines of the AFREXIM Annual Meetings in Nassau Bahamas.
He expressed his excitement at the initial engagements with Government officials of Grenada.
“Our expansion drive has also been influenced by request coming from some of these countries outside Ghana looking at the good work that we are doing in Ghana”, he said.
Area of focus and the Caribbean expansion Initiative
According Mr. McKorley some of the Group’s operations that will be expanded to the Caribbean are logistics, shipping, aviation services and the salt business.
“There is a lot of opportunities in that region, and the necessary feasibility has been done to ensure that the partnership and necessary synergies materializes for the group going forward”.
He disclosed that there are plans to extend some Ghanaian businesses along on the expansion drive to the Caribbean.
“I have already engaged some Ghanaian businesses and even some of the businesses, especially the SME’s are with me on this trip to the Caribbean”
He added that there is the need to support Ghanaians to grow their businesses, adding own Ghanaians can turn around the economy.
“I have a real estate developer with me, as well as major player in the FINTECH industry with me here at the AREXIM meetings”, he said.
Visiting St Lucia as part of Caribbean expansion drive
Dr. McKorley as part of his Caribbean expansion initiative also paid a visit to the St Lucia to personally, engage some senior government officials, from Trade, Commence, Deputy Prime Minister and investment promotion officials.
He revealed that the decision was taken to participate in the Port and Logistics of St Lucia after visiting port areas in St Lucia and other areas in the country.
At one of the meetings, the Minister of Commence, Manufacturing, Business Development, Corporate and Consumer Affairs Hon Emma Hippolyte expressed her government’s move to put in place the necessary measure to aid the investment of the McDan Group.
“We will take up this issue at the cabinet level, because we are having a cabinet meeting today. This shows you how, at the government level we are serious about the situation”
Hippolyte also revealed that, the McDan Group could look at making St Lucia the hub for his operations in the Caribbean.
