MiDA unveils internship programme for women

The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) will soon engage some 50 qualified female females for its internship and Mentoring programme.

The initiative comes under the Ghana Internship and Mentoring Programme and seeks to prepare female Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students in tertiary institutions and Technical, Vocational, Education and Training (TVET) institutions for power sector careers.

The programme will take off on a pilot basis during this year’s long vacation.

The interns, to be received from five tertiary institutions, including the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Accra Technical University and will be placed with Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Director for Gender and Social Inclusion at MiDA, Dr Cherub Antwi-Nsiah told Business Finder explained that the project is meant to support STEM students in degree and diploma programmes in universities and in technical and vocational schools to gain practical skills which will be relevant for the job market.

“A minimum of 300 interns will be supported through this programme between 2018 and 2021,” she stated.

The interns who will be under mentoring for two months will be paid stipends, at par with allowances received by national service persons.

She explained that the MiDA Gender and Social Inclusion Directorate was responsible for ensuring a gender responsive and socially inclusive electricity delivery.

Key areas under the ambit of the Directorate include promoting consultation and engagement with women, vulnerable groups, government institutions and the private sector.
