The fall in gold prices coupled with illegal mining, high community expectation and non-availability of skilled labour from mining operating communities have been identified as some of the basic challenges hampering the operations of mining companies in the country.
Mr Eric Acheampong, Acting General Manager of the Nzema Gold Operations of Adamus Resources Limited, said the company has introduced some business improvement intervention measures to ensure that it stays in business within the next five years.
He said the company has signed a reclamation security bond to ensure that affected land areas were reclaimed whilst alternative land use programmes would be put in place to grow the agricultural sector and improve food security.
Mr Acheampong made this known an interview with the Ghana News Agency, during a familiarization visit by the Board members of the Minerals Commission to the Mine Site at Nkroful in the Western Region.
Mr Emmanuel Kofi Kaningen, Board Chairman of the Commission, said their visit was to learn at first hand the impact of the current energy and economic crisis on the mines operations and to “see how best we can help each other.”
On the current impasse between the company and the Anwia community, he urged the company to find appropriate channels to handle the issue, as well as building a stronger partnership with their operating communities.
Dr Toni Aubynn, Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, said it is important to deepen the Commission’s engagement with Operators as they were key in terms of revenue, foreign exchange and community support.
