Minimum Wage Up

Thu, 1 Feb 2007 Source: --

The daily minimum wage has been adjusted from ¢16,000 to ¢19,000. This represents an 18 per cent increase.

The increase follows an agreement reached among the members of the National Tripartite Committee (NTC), comprising the government, the Ghana Employers Association (GEA) and the Trades Union Congress (TUC), after several weeks of negotiations.

A source close to the NTC disclosed this to the Daily Graphic Accra yesterday.
According to the source, a meeting to formally announce the increase was cancelled at the last minute following the inability of the major players to patronise the event.
It indicated that a meeting of the NTC would be convened today, at which the deal would be formally signed by the partners, explaining that after the signing ceremony, a press conference would be held, during which the partners would announce the new minimum wage.
Last year’s minimum wage was announced in February, at the time of fuel prices increases and it was meant to cushion workers against the economic impact of the fuel price hikes.
A communiqué signed by the then Minister of Manpower, Youth and Employment, Mr Kofi Adda, the Executive Secretary of the GEA, Mrs Rose Karikari Anang, and the Secretary-General of the TUC, Mr Kwasi Adu-Amankwah, also stated that a technical sub-committee of the NTC would conclude its work on a national living wage before the end of the year for consideration.
