More companies donate towards Farmers' Day

Accra, Dec. 1, GNA - Six companies on Monday donated various items to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to be presented to farmers and fishermen during the 19th National Farmers Day celebration.

The Companies were C. Woermann Ghana Limited which donated spraying machines and water pump valued at nine million cedis, British American Tobacco Company Ghana Limited, presented a cheque of 47 million cedis, and Global Haulage, 35 Sewing Machines valued at 28 million cedis.

The rest were Federation Commodities, 300 pieces of Wellington boots valued at 27 million cedis, Polytank Ghana Limited donated assorted quantity of plastic products and Seafaring Ghana Limited presented a cheque for five million cedis.

This year's Farmers Day, which falls on Friday, December 5 is under the theme; "Enhancing Agriculture and Food Security through improved Agribusiness,"

The day is in recognition of the valuable contribution of the nation's farmers, fishermen and other stakeholders in the Agricultural sector to national development.

The national Day event would be celebrated at Cape Coast in the Central Region and all the ten regions are also expected to hold regional and district days to award deserving farmers and fishermen.

Addressing both the companies and Members of the National Award Committee after the presentation, Major Courage Quashigah (Rtd), the Minister congratulated the distinguished winners whilst expressing gratitude to the donors.

He however, called for continued support of all to ensure that efforts to achieve national food security was attained within a reasonable period.

Maj. Quashigah called for recognition of the role of farmers towards national development stressing, "agriculture is the real engine for Ghana's economic growth".

As part of the celebration, the 67 award winners toured Cocoa Processing Company in Tema, where they were briefed about the operations of the company.
