The flag bearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has never indicated anywhere that if he wins the December polls to become the next president of Ghana, he will remove all taxes, as is being peddled by communicators of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and some persons in government, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has stated.

According to the NPP lawmaker, some spokespersons of the government were misconstruing plans espoused by the opposition leader to abolish some taxes, especially on raw materials.

Speaking on GH One’s State of Affairs Monday August 8, Mr. Agyarko said: “I want to state clearly, with all the force I command, that our flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, has never said anywhere that when he comes he will abolish all taxes… He said that he would realign some of the taxes on raw materials for manufacturing.”

He added: “You need somebody who is bold to say for the whole spectrum of manufacturing I will remove the taxes. We [NPP] are saying if we come, beyond pharmaceuticals, there are many other industries that if we give them that kind of leverage, they will grow and become not just employment-generating activities but even lead in exports.

“He (Akufo-Addo) says also that he will generally reduce corporate taxes. Today, some of it hovers around 35 per cent and he says he will probably bring it down to 25 per cent, but he hasn’t said anywhere that he will remove all taxes.”
