New Group To Manage Urban Water

With effect from next month, Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) will cease to be managers of the country?s urban water supply.

Aqua Vitra Limited, a subsidiary of Vitens Rand Water Services, a joint company between Vitens International of the Netherlands and Rand Water Services of South Africa will take over for five years to ensure to improve upon urban water delivery.

The Government and the two companies in November last year signed a 10.9 million dollar contract to provide a management team that will ensure effective capacity building and efficient water delivery services in the country under a World Bank programme.

The contract formed part of a public private partnership that empowers the operators to be responsible for the production, transmission, distribution and commercial aspect of water delivery.

Michael Agyemang, GWCL?s chief public relations manager, told the paper yesterday that the contract stood the chance of being extended, terminated or given on a longer leasehold depending on the performance of the operators.
