The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, has expressed confidence that the new Jamestown Harbour will boost economic activities in the country.
Speaking during the commissioning of the harbour on Friday, September 14, 2024, he announced that the facility is expected to create close to 3,000 indirect and direct jobs.
"This fishing harbour will generate direct and indirect jobs close to about 3,000 daily, creating new opportunities and livelihoods for our people. I wish therefore to implore that the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to liase with the office of the Regional Minister when it comes to recruitment of the youth in this fishing harbour," he stated.
He also stated that the harbour is a major milestone for the people of James Town.
"Jamestown is one of the oldest districts in Accra. Which emerged as a community around 17th century. At the end of the 19th century, the community had become a mixture of commercial and fishing activities. Today, it is one of the favourite landmarks in Accra, in the South part of the city where the Atlantic Ocean meets the land. The commissioning of this harbor, therefore, marks a remarkable milestone in the history of the Ga-Dangbe People, which has contributed immensely to the fishing industry in our country," he noted.
Work commenced on the Jamestown Fishing Harbour in 2018, through the collaborative efforts of a number of stakeholders, made up of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), CRCC Harbour and Channel Engineering Bureau Group Co. Ltd., the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), with funding from the People’s Republic of China.
The scope of work included dredging, breakwater construction, berthing facilities, navigational aids, paved roads and yards, water supply and drainage works, electrical engineering works, mechanical equipment and corrosion prevention systems.
The state-of-the art facility has an administration and office building, shops, a fish market, ice-making plant with a capacity of 60 tonnes per day, a cold storage facility with a capacity of 200 tonnes, an engine repair workshop, a ship repair workshop, an hydraulic structure engineering facility, a kindergarten, an entrance guard, a sewage treatment room, and a police and fire protection station.
