The New Juaben Municipal Assembly has began the construction of a new transport terminal at the cost of 600,000 dollars.
The project, which is expected to help de-congest the Koforidua-Accra and Koforidua-Kumasi terminals, is being funded by the World Bank, and it is the third of such facilities to be provided in the Municipality by the Assembly.
The project consists of a three-story office building, a ticket booth, a 54-capacity passenger terminal and resting room, 120 market stalls, and a 5,800-metre square pavement floor.
The terminal would serve as the transport station for the Koforidua-Ho-Hohoe, the Koforidua-Somanya and the Akosombo areas.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Dr Kwaku Owusu Acheampong, said already all squatters on the land had been re-located, especially second-hand cloth dealers, adding that they would be re-allocated to the terminal stalls when completed.
He said all other traders who had containers and makeshift structures had also been listed to ensure that after the project, those evicted were given the priority to continue with their trading activities.
The MCE was grateful to the Second-Hand Cloth Dealers Association, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and other identifiable groups, for their co-operation, and assured them that they would be allowed to ply their trade as soon as the project was completed
