Accra, Dec.24, GNA- Newmont Ghana Gold Limited in collaboration with Junior Graphic on Saturday presented prizes to 136 school children in the Greater Accra region who were successful in the Gold Story quizzes which were published by the Junior Graphic. The award winners from the primary, junior and secondary schools in the region were awarded with books for their efforts. Newmont, in collaboration with Junior Graphic started serializing the Gold Story in the Junior Graphic in August 2006 after which questions were asked.

Mawuena Dumor, the communications Manager of Newmont on the occasion

said, the Gold Story that entailed the seven steps of mining was a way of educating the children on how gold extraction was done and how mining companies operate.

She said, although gold was one of the important minerals the country was blessed with, little was known about its extraction. She said, the exercise was a way of sharing information about what Newmont does with its stakeholders and the youth was an important stakeholder in its operations.

"The occasion was to recognise the gift of our children and to celebrate their remarkable efforts," she added.

Mawuena Dumor therefore, expressed appreciation to Junior Graphic for giving them the opportunity to use their medium to reach out to a large audience and making their campaign successful. Richmond Gyamfi-Addae and Crystal Abena Nyamekye, five and six years respectively both from Cradle Grace Family Montessori received the youngest winners awards.

They received 100 story and textbooks for their school library. The winners from the other regions are to pick their prizes from Junior Graphic offices in their regions.

Mrs. Victoria Odoi, Deputy Editor of the Junior Graphic said the aim of the paper was to educate the youth on all aspects of national issues and that the Gold Story was another way of learning about the gold extraction process.

The ultimate prize winners from the ten regions would have the opportunity of visiting the Newmont mining site in the Brong Ahafo Region to have a first hand experience about how the company operates.
