Company is one of only two mining companies to make the list

ACCRA, March 15, 2010 – Newmont Mining Corporation, the parent company of Newmont Ghana recently ranked 16th on Corporate Responsibility (CR) Magazine’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens List.

Newmont’s latest showing improves on the 2009 rankings in which the company placed 39th on the list. Newmont Ghana’s efforts to consistently pursue sustainable, socially and environmentally responsible mining, along with similar efforts by Newmont’s other global operations, contributed to this recognition from CR Magazine.

The ranking follows on from Newmont’s renewed selection in 2009 to the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the third consecutive year. In 2007, Newmont be¬came the first gold company to join the DJSI World.

“Thanks to the efforts of Newmont Ghana’s employees and those from other Newmont operations around the globe, we can all be proud of this acknowledgment of Newmont's environmental and social performance,” said Jeff Huspeni, Regional Senior Vice President for Africa Operations. “Consistently demonstrating industry leadership in these areas is vital to ensuring the sustainability of our operations in Ghana.”

The 2010 100 Best Corporate Citizens List is determined based on an analysis of seven categories of publicly available information for more than 1,000 leading U.S. companies. The seven categories include: the Environment, Climate Change, Human Rights, Philanthropy, Employee Relations, Financial Perform¬ance and Governance. Stakeholders from investors to employees to govern¬ment regulators monitor the 100 Best Corporate Citizens List to help gauge a company’s performance.

The 2010 rankings show that Newmont Mining Corporation scored better in four of the seven categories, compared to its 2009 performance, while maintaining the same excellent score in Governance. Newmont joins respected businesses such as Hewlett-Packard, In¬tel, Coca-Cola, IBM and Microsoft on the list and is the only mining company in the top 20.

In partnership with host communities at Ahafo and Akyem, as well as other stakeholders, Newmont Ghana is executing sustainable programs that extend beyond the mine’s life cycle and strengthen communities. Major partnership projects at the Ahafo Operation include the Ahafo Agribusiness Growth Initiative (to improve Ahafo farmers’ productivity, access to markets and income, implemented with the NGO, African Connections); the Ahafo Linkages Program with the International Finance Corporation to enhance the capacity of approximately 60 local businesses and two key financial institutions over three years; and the ‘Adopt-a-Cluster’ program with the Ghana Centre for Educational Development, Evaluation and Management, to enhance the capacity of Ahafo schools.

Information on Newmont and Newmont Ghana activities can be found in the company’s annual sustainability report, www.BeyondTheMine.com. The report is published as part of Newmont’s ongoing obligations as a founding member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (www.icmm.com) and in accordance with its commitments under the United Nations’ Global Compact (www.unglobalcompact.org) and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (www.voluntaryprinciples.org).
