The Anum Valley Co-operative Rice Growers Society cannot get buyers for the large quantity of its rice harvested last year. The society fears the rice, stored in its warehouse at Nobewan in the Ejisu-Juaben District, would grow mouldy if it is not sold at the earliest possible time.
The society has appealed to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and interested buyers to help them dispose of the stock to pave the way for further production.
This was made known at the general meeting at Nobewam at which Mr William Azorliade, Project Manager, said even though the rice was of an improved type that the Crops Research Institute released, it was surprising that it had not attracted buyers.
Mr Azorliade said the marketing problem had restrained the society from repaying loans granted them by the Asante-Akim Rural Bank and the Ejisu-Juaben District Assembly. Nana Frimpong Manso, chairman of the society, appealed to the government to reduce the importation of foreign rice to boost local production.
