Farmers in the Northern regions of Ghana have commended Government and the Minister of Food and Agriculture for improving the socio-economic conditions of farmers in the country.

According to the farmers, the introduction of the flagship Planting for Food and Jobs programme has greatly improved the lots of farmers in terms of productivity and marketing of produce.

The farmers observed that apart from getting access to improved seeds and fertilizers at a cheaper cost, the inclusion of the marketing package as well as the extension services have given farmers in the northern part of the country major boost in their activities.

Welcoming the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Hon. Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, to the Northern Region, Spokesperson for the Peasant Farmers Association, Alhaji Adams Nasiru, said the farmers were very pleased with the love and commitment exhibited by the Minister towards the development of agriculture in the country since his inception.

"We would like to express our appreciation to you in particular and government in general for your timely intervention in alleviating the plights of farmers in the country" He emphasised.

Alhaji Adams Nasiru further pointed out that for the first time in so many years they have witnessed the constant presence of District Agriculture Officers and extension agents on their farms.

This, according to them, was as a result of the adequate resources and motivations giving to the staff of the Ministry through the initiative of the Minister.

The Minister of Food and Agriculture and his entourage are embarking on a seven-day working visit to the three northern regions.
