Traders at the Nungua market have expressed their joy over the good sales they were making this Christmas season.
A number of traders that the Ghana News Agency spoke to at the Nungua market on Monday said sales were moving on smoothly, better than last year.
Mr Kobina Gbandi, a yam trader, said his goods were being patronized and expressed the hope to make more sales in the festive season.
Ms Anita Allegye, a storekeeper who deals in assorted items such as rice, cooking oil and canned food, said although they were making brisk business, some Ghanaians were still finding it difficult to buy things in the market due to economic challenges.
At the Nungua market, three small size tubers of yam (puna) went for GH?17.00, whereas a single large tuber was being sold for GH?7.00 and GH? 8.00 each.
A small size container of tomatoes was going for GH? 20.00 and GH? 25.00; while five fingers of okro were being sold at one Ghana Cedis.
For plantain, eight fingers of ripe apem was being sold at GH? 4.00, whereas four fingers of apemtu went for GH? 5.00; four fingers of unripe apem went for GH? 4.00 and three fingers of apemtu was GH? 4.00.
A heap of four small size cassava tubers was being sold at GH? 3.00; whilst a heap of three medium size cassava tubers went for GH? 5.00.
A gallon of frytol cooking oil, soya bean oil, sunflower oil and canola oil went for GH? 27.00, GH? 42.00, GH? 45.00 and GH? 57.00 respectively.
A gallon and a large bottle of palm oil sold for GH? 30.00 and GH? 10.00 respectively. Six large size, five medium size and five small size snails went for GH? 50.00, GH? 40.00 and GH? 30.00 respectively.
For rice; a 50 kg of perfumed rice ranged from GH? 80.00 to GH? 145.00, depending on the brand.
An olonka (an American tin) of white cowpea was sold in the range of GH? 12.00, GH? 15.00, and GH? 18.00; whereas red cowpea cost GH? 12.00.
A quarter size tin tomato of the following brands gino, salsa, Africa’s choice and tasty tom were going for GH? 2.00, GH? 2.50, GH? 1.80 and GH?2.10 respectively.
A crate of egg cost between GH? 18.00 and GH? 20.00. However, chickens were very scarce to come by at market, due to the outbreak of the Avian Influenza (Bird flu) in the Greater Accra Region.
The few poultry vendors at the market refused to talk to the Agency.
