More than 1,600 truckloads of cocoa are currently stuck at the Commodity Village, a warehouse belonging to the Cocoa Processing Company (CPC) at Beahu near Takoradi in the Western region.
XYZ News' Western regional Correspondent, Emmanuel Ohene Gyan reports that Labourers who offload the bags of cocoa pods are on strike in protest to poor welfare concerns, thus the delay in emptying the trucks of their merchandise.
They are demanding an increment in wages.
Each of them is paid Ghc0.15p per bag of cocoa offloaded, but they are now demanding their wage per bag be increased to Ghc0.50p.
Over 2000 haulage drivers whose trucks are stuck at the Village as a result of the strike by the Offloaders, also demonstrated at the forecourt of the Commodity Village over the delay in offloading the bags of cocoa pods.
The Drivers fear the delay will not only compromise the quality of the cocoa beans but also affect the weight of the merchandise and further result in increased truck haulage fees.
