Pay us or we sue – Contractors to Gov’t

Spokesperson for aggrieved road contractors who haven’t been paid moneys owed them by the government, Mr Gordian Wononuah, has asked the government to pay the contractors else they will seek redress in the law courts.

He said their lawyers are currently putting documents together to go to court in the event that the government fails to listen to their class to pay them.

About 200 contractors working for the Ghana First Company Limited, a firm tasked by the government to construct toilet facilities, boreholes and other facilities across the country under a public-private-partnership (PPP) arrangement, are demanding the immediate payment of over GHS 50 million owed them by the government.

According to them, although the terms of agreement compel the Ghana First Company to clear the backlog of outstanding arrears, the company has failed to do so for the past year.

The aggrieved contractors, therefore, want the government to immediately intervene and engage them in negotiations to devise ways of resolving the matter.

Speaking to Accra-based Class FM after a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, 10 October 2019, Mr Wononuah, called on the government to secure bank guarantees to resolve the matter or they will seek redress in court.

“We do have other options; our lawyers are working on the case. Our lawyers will write a formal letter for payment and then we will take it up from there,” he stated.

Four contracts were signed individually and have been awarded since 2017.

The contracts, per the terms of the agreement, include the construction of 14-seater, 16-seater and 20-seater-type facilities at costs ranging from GHS 300,000 to GHS 500, 000.
