Security personnel from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Customs division of the GRA and the Ghana Military Police have graduated from the National Dog Academy and Military Police Training School after taking part in the Dog Handler’s and Special Investigations Basic Courses.

The idea of introducing dogs into Ghana’s security set up was initiated in 1962 during the first Republic and commissioned in 1964 with an initial 20 Alsatian dogs brought by Russians for explosive detection.
They went through Narcotics Detection, Currency Detection, Tracking and Trailing and Law Enforcement all with the use of working dogs.
15 out of the 21 participants from the Special Investigations branch went through extensive training on Military Law, Criminal, Civil and Court Procedures, Cybercrime Investigations, Finger Print and First Aid.
The Provost Marshal of the Ghana Armed Forces, Col. EK Commey indicated that, the knowledge and skills acquired will help participants perform creditably in their fields of work.
“We have given them all the knowledge and skills required to perform creditably in their field. This unit would follow their progress in the field and still support them in our experience in making sure that they excel in their endeavor. For the dog handlers we shall invite them back to this school during the course of next year to sharpen their skill,” he said.
He appreciated the Former Executive Secretary of Narcotics Control Board Yaw Akrasie Sarpong who was the chairman of the occasion, for his contribution in driving the vision of the school.
