Price of wheat decreases in Ghanaian market

The price of wheat has dropped in Ghanaian markets within the first week of January 2016.

It dropped by 16 percent to close the week at an average price of GHS 8.30 per olunka.

This was followed by Tomato which made a 5 percent drop to close the week at GHS 11.30 per ‘medium size tomato tin. Soya beans followed with 2 percent drop to close the week at GHS 5.60 per olunka. Groundnut also followed with a percentage drop to close the week at GHS 12.80 per olunka.

According to Esoko Ghana, cassava (fresh tubers) gained 28 percent to close the week at GHS 5.40 per 3-4 tubers.

Rice (imported – unclesam) also followed with 5 percent gained to close the week at GHS 29.20 per “1 small bag (5kg).”

Cassava (Gari) and Rice (Local) also followed with a 2 percent gain each to close the week at GHS 4.60 and 7.60 respectively. Yam (Pona) also gained a percentage point to close the week at GHS 4.30 per “medium size tuber.”

The price for an “olunka” of maize on the various markets remained the same. A “medium size tomato tin” full of fresh tomatoes lost 7 percent in Kumasi to close the week at GHS 7.60 with Tamale losing 30 percent to close at GHS 7.20 and also with Techiman dropping 29 percent to close the week at GHS 6.70.

The commodity, however, made some gains in Accra and Takoradi, In Accra, it gained 3 percent to close the week at GHS 20.30 and in Takoradi a 10 percent to close the week at GHS 19.80. In the other markets, the price remained the same.
