The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has expressed grave concern over a video circulating on social media showing market women being transported on a fishing canoe to the Anyanui market in the Volta Region.

In a statement issued on Thursday November 7, 2025, the Authority condemned the act as “a clear disregard for safety regulations and a reckless endangerment of human life.”

The GMA noted that the incident comes in the wake of a recent canoe accident in the Oti Region that claimed 16 lives.

“This incident is particularly alarming… especially as the Authority has intensified efforts to ensure compliance with safety protocols on our waterways,” the statement said.

The Authority emphasised key safety regulations, warning the public that fishing boats, canoes, and other vessels are certified for fishing activities only. They are “strictly prohibited from being used for any other commercial activities, including the transport of passengers.”

The GMA also reiterated that “certified life jackets are compulsory for all persons aboard any boat or canoe on Ghana’s waters, regardless of the distance of travel.” Observers say the video suggests a “complete failure to observe this non-negotiable safety standard.”

The Authority urged residents living along coastal and inland water areas, as well as community leaders, to support GMA’s agenda of compliance and safe water transport.

“The Ghana Maritime Authority is working tirelessly to enhance safety on all Ghanaian waters,” the statement concluded.
