Bernard Adjei, Deputy General Secretary of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU), has called for respect for the country’s labour laws and institutions to promote peaceful industrial atmosphere.

He said although Ghana has had a long tradition of industrial relations practice, it was regrettable that both employers and employees had refused to be guided by the basic principles in resolving disputes.

He was addressing the Ashanti Regional Delegates Congress of the Union in Kumasi on Tuesday.

Mr. Adjei urged the government, labour and employers to work together to streamline labour institutions and laws to make them functional.

He said the PSWU, as a public sector union, was determined to confront the many challenges to its pursuit of growth, development and effectiveness.

He said in line with this, it was whipping up the interest of the youth in its activities with the view of integrating them into its structures to promote change and help to create a favourable working environment.

Mr Adjei said by focusing on the youth, the Union hoped to broaden their awareness - raise their level of consciousness and commitment to the ideals of the trades’ union movement.

He called on the young people to take advantage of the opportunity and become active in its activities.

Alhaji Abudu Baba, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the PSWU, stressed the need for members to show keen interest in its activities and to re-organize the branches to make the union more vibrant.
