Road to energy sector revival is long and costly - Nana Amoasi

Nana Amoasi VII, the Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), has strongly criticised the government’s handling of the energy sector, accusing it of inefficiency and a lack of transparency.

In an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Amoasi laid bare his concerns, stating that the sector urgently needs repair, which will require significant investment and a long-term commitment.

“We have so much to address, and it will require heavy investment and several years to return to where we were, at least back to the state we were in early 2017,” Amoasi stated.

His comments reflect a growing frustration with the current state of the energy sector, which many have felt has deteriorated over the past few years.

According to Amoasi, a combination of mismanagement and an absence of effective governance has led to significant setbacks in the energy infrastructure, resulting in a strained system that now struggles to meet the country’s energy needs.

The IES Executive Director didn’t hold back in his assessment of the government’s performance, accusing it of being “blinded” to the sector’s pressing issues.

“What is there to hide?” he rhetorically asked, signalling his belief that the government has failed to be transparent with the public about the challenges within the energy sector.

Amoasi also emphasized that the government has not fully capitalized on the opportunities and resources available, which could have strengthened the sector.

“We believe the government has not been efficient or effective in utilizing the opportunities and resources entrusted to it,” he said.
