The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kwasi Afreh Biney, has challenged the Trust’s subsidiaries to take greater responsibility for their growth and become financially self-sustaining rather than relying on repeated bailouts.

Speaking at the inauguration of Trust Logistics Limited’s (TLL) new trucks and official vehicles on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Afreh Biney said SSNIT would support subsidiaries that demonstrate leadership, innovation and the ability to manage their resources effectively.

“What I’m seeing here today reflects the new thinking that I want these investment companies and subsidiaries to show,” he said.

He said SSNIT’s approach was to encourage subsidiaries to “take your destiny into your own hands” and change the narrative about their performance, stressing that support from the parent organisation would follow demonstrated effort and progress.

“When we see that you are changing the story, then we need to step in and help,” he said.

“But if right from the beginning you haven’t shown leadership, you haven’t shown the ability to manage what has been given in the past, we will not bail you out,” he added.

According to Afreh Biney, repeatedly injecting resources into poorly performing subsidiaries could undermine SSNIT’s financial strength and its ability to meet its obligations to pensioners.

He likened the situation to parents continuously supporting an adult child who fails to become self-sufficient despite receiving years of education, assistance and opportunities.

“If we continue bailing you out and you bleed us, you will negatively impact our assets and our management,” he said.

Afreh Biney disclosed that SSNIT currently has more than 2.1 million active members and over 265,000 active pensioners, with the Trust paying more than GH¢600 million in pensions each month.

He said the size of the pension scheme required SSNIT to be prudent in managing its investments and protecting the funds entrusted to it.

The Director-General commended TLL for demonstrating the innovation and initiative expected from SSNIT subsidiaries, particularly its efforts to address business challenges and create new opportunities.

He urged subsidiaries to identify opportunities for collaboration and create synergies within the SSNIT investment ecosystem instead of operating in isolation.

He said stronger collaboration could create additional business opportunities, expand SSNIT’s fixed-income investments and support the growth of its subsidiaries.

“If the numbers are good, we have a responsibility to grow our fixed income. See how we can leverage on the story they create for us to support them,” he said.

Afreh Biney encouraged TLL’s management and staff to maintain the momentum and translate the new investment into measurable growth and stronger performance.

“We are very proud of you,” he said, while urging the company to continue building on its progress through innovation, collaboration and responsible management.
