SSNIT to recover 600 million cedis from employers in Cape Coast

Cape Coast, June 17, GNA - The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has instituted measures to recover over 600 million cedis from employers in the Cape Coast Municipality who defaulted in paying SSNIT benefits of employees for last year. Mr Williams Penuku, Cape Coast District Manager of SSNIT, who made this known at a press briefing, said the defaulting employers should pay the outstanding amount voluntarily to avert legal action taken against them.

The Trust was negotiating with the defaulters for the payment of at least one-third of the amount.

Mr Penaku said some employers failed to register their employees with the Scheme while others under declare the salaries of workers. He said under declaration of salaries affects pension packages. Mr Penuku also expressed regret that some employers pay their workers wages as low as 40,000 cedis a month.

Mr Kweku Osei-Bimpong, Head of Public Affairs, SSNIT, said a five-year strategic plan has been put in place to help reduce the processing time of SSNIT benefits from the current 46 days to a minimum of one month to attract more customers.
