The Intercity State Transport Company Ltd. (STC) is in the process of diversifying its operations as part of strategic measures for creating additional revenue generation streams to enable it remain in business, in view of the current keen competition prevailing in the transport sector of the country.

“For now, the company has acquired licence from the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority (DVLA) to enable it set up 24-hr DVLA centres in Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi, and to be replicated in the other regional capitals to help reduce pressure on the statutory DVLA and enable workers to access the facilities after work,” said Rev. Samuel Nuamah Donkor, Managing Director of STC, when he briefed the media in Accra on the current state of the once-vibrant transport company.

He said it is very sad to see this state institution that used to be the leader in the country’s transport business in this situation now. Rev. Nuamah Donkor said when he assumed duty he had to quickly put sweeping strategic plans in place to redeem the company from its total collapse, and God being so good it has started finding its feet with the importation of about 100 new buses from Scania in Sweden and M.A.N. of Germany, which will be hopefully delivered by end of year.

He said the about-350 workforce of the company has decided to sacrifice 50% of their salary into a special fund to complement any assistance from the public to purchase buses and offset repair costs for its over-aged buses. Rev. Nuamah Donkor said what the staff has done has indeed touched the hearts of many organisations and individuals, and the Ghana Standards Authority on reading the selfless contribution of the STC staff has presented a cheque for GH¢5,000 to the company as its contribution toward the revamping of STC.

He said the company has now moved away from the era of state-reliance to a limited liability company, and has to survive by its own initiatives.

He explained that the company has created a platform for other transport companies to partner the STC in its operations, based on mutual understanding.
