STEP trained tailors still unemployed

Koforidua, July 11, GNA - Some 460 people trained in dressmaking and tailoring in the Eastern Region in the last four years under the STEP programme are still unemployed because of failure of the government to provide them with the promised start-up capital.

Mr Alfred Yaw Kissi, the Eastern Regional Secretary of Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association (GNTDA), said this at the graduation ceremony of 110 young men and women trained by the members of the association at Koforidua on Friday.

He appealed to the government to look critically at the issue so that the resources used in the training of those young people would not be wasted.

Mr Kissi said this year the association has purchased 80 million cedis worth of the Tax Stamp on behalf of its members and alleged that the tax system had loopholes that needed to be tackled.

Mrs Gladys Appiah-Ansah, the New Juaben Municipal Chairperson of GNTDA, complained about the many levies paid by members of the association to the New Juaben Municipal Assembly and called for a review.
