STX of Korea to acquire Saltpond Ceramics Factory

Nankesedo (C/R), Nov. 1, GNA - STX Construction and Engineering Company of Korea is to acquire the Saltpond Ceramics Factory and the Aboso Glass Factory, Mr Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman West, has said.

He said STX needed the two factories to produce sanitary wares it would use in houses it would build in the country. Mr Quansah said this at a durbar at Nankesedo, also known as Saltpond Lower Town, to mark the Golden Jubilee of the enstoolment of Nana Baa VII, the chief of the town and the Nyimfahene of Nkusukum Traditional Area.

The durbar also marked the celebration of the annual "Ayerye festival of the people of the town.

Saltpond Ceramics Factory, a major source of employment in the Mfantseman Municipality, became defunct over a decade ago and was divested to some Chinese eight years ago but they were not able to resuscitate it.

Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, a member of the Council of State, said community development did not rest with chiefs or the rich alone but it must be seen as a collective responsibility. "The rich and the poor, the chief and the subject all have roles to play in the development of their communities," he said and appealed to chiefs to create peace in their communities and areas to enable them to rule for long.

Mr Ebo Barton-Odro, the Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Minister of Justice, said the government was determined to improve amenities and infrastructure as a means to attracting investors into the country to help to develop the economy.

Mr Henry Kweku Hayfron, the Municipal Chief Executive, said there were plans to establish a nursing training school at Saltpond to cater for the shortage of nurses in the area. He said some unused buildings belonging to the Geological Survey Department were being considered for the project. Nana Baa expressed gratitude to the citizens, especially the sub-chiefs, the Municipal Assembly and all those who contributed to the success of his reign.
