Obuasi, Dec. 23, GNA - Sandvik Mining and Construction (SMC), a subsidiary company to Sandvik in Sweden, has presented two separate cheques valued at GH¢1,500 to support human development activities in the Obuasi Municipality. The first cheque for GH¢1,000 was to support a citrus project being undertaken by the Obuasi Sister City Organisation in collaboration with the Riverside Sister City Organisation based in California, USA. The second cheque of GH¢500 was to help improve the lives of orphans and the destitute at the Adullam orphanage. Mr Nuhu Salifu, the Human Resource and Administrative Manager of SMC, who did the presentation on behalf of the company, observed that the donations formed part of the company's social and community responsibility.

He said Sandvik was committed to improving the lives of the people within its operational area, especially children and hoped the donation to Adullam orphanage would go a long way to achieve that objective.

Mr Salifu used the experience gained at the orphanage to encourage other organizations and individuals to support the development of Adullam because it was a laudable initiative. The Sandvik delegation also interacted with the inmates and encouraged, comforted and demonstrated love for them. Mrs Louise Timothy, the Executive Director of the orphanage, commended Sandvik for assistance and hoped the donation would help to address some of the challenges facing the home. She said a major challenge is the issue of boarding and lodging with the growth in the number of inmates every now and then and appealed for assistance from institutions and individuals. The home, currently, has over 170 inmates.

Mrs Timothy added that despite the difficulties, the orphanage had made lots of progress. She noted that one of the inmates is now a qualified medical officer while some are in higher institutions of learning.
