Second-hand cloth sellers calls for modern market

The Second-hand Cloth Sellers’ Association in Accra, has appealed to the government to ensure the construction of a modern market complex to relief members from fire outbreaks.

Mr. Justice Amarlai Tetteh, who retained his position as Chairman in an election held on Thursday, expressed regret that their members lost millions of cedis through fire outbreaks in 2002 and 2007.

He said they would be grateful if the wooden “TS Market” structures at Tudu near the State Transport Corporation yard are rebuild into modern facilities to attract customers.

Mr. Tetteh contended that despite the revenue collected from the association over the years by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the market still lacked basic amenities like banks and offices whilst insurance companies refused to insure their goods because they are in wooden structures.

He outlined investment programmes to solicit support for the accelerated development of the market, to harness the large business potentials of members.

Mr. Tetteh said the business investment would enhance the collaboration of the association and non-governmental organisations to attract investors who would set up ventures when the new market facilities are provided.

Mrs Naakie Osam-Sackey, Revenue Accountant of the AMA who supervised the election of the association in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the Assembly’s position on the issue of relocation would be given a human face when it starts.

“There is the need to be cautious in order not to disrupt business programmes of the association which the members would be embarked on,” she said.

She appealed to the traders to lend their support by cooperating with the Assembly to realise its vision of transforming the city into the best destination in the country.**
