Mr Bossman Owusu, a Communications Analyst at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Tuesday, said used fridges that have been seized at the ports is helping to conserve energy.

He said 15,000 of such used fridges have so far been seized at the ports under the UNDP/Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Energy Efficiency Project, and many megawatt of power, which could be used to power 6000 households have been conserved.

Mr Owusu said this when he inspected a refrigeration dismantle facility of Presank Limited at Afienya in Greater Accra Region.

He commended the company for adopting safety measures to ensure the dismantling of the various fridges.

He said the refrigerator rebate programme, which allows old fridges to be exchanged for new ones is also helping in conserving energy and urged the public to actively participate in it.

Mr Richard Boadi Soadwa, Project Manager at Presank Limited, a Domestic and Hazardous Waste Management Company, said safety measures have been adopted to dismantle the various fridges.

He said, the used fridges are first de-gassed into cylinders provided by the Environmental Protection Agency before the separation of the various parts, including metals, plastics and foams, which are sent to the various recycling companies.

The UNDP/GEF Energy Efficiency Project is a three -year 2.1 million dollar project being carried out in partnership with Ghana Energy Commission.
