Shutdown 'won’t adversely impact electricity supply' – GRIDCo

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has allayed public fears of power outages in the country as Karpowership Ghana prepares to relocate its 470 megawatts power barge from Tema in the Greater Accra Region to Takoradi in the Western Region.

Karpowership announced Monday that the powership will from Thursday be shut down for 17 days to enable the company relocate the barge to enable it utilise natural gas from the Western enclave, a move aimed at saving the government millions of dollars annually.

The planned shutdown, many fear, could trigger erratic electricity supply to some parts of the country within the period, but GRIDCo has assured the public of continuous power supply to the power distributor ECG.

A statement by GRIDCo Tuesday said the planned shutdown will not “will not have adverse impact on power supply to electricity consumers”.

It assured the public that “there is adequate generating capacity to meet power demand during the period that the barge will be temporarily disconnected from the national grid”.

Notwithstanding, GRIDCo said it will keep updating stakeholders on the power supply situations “as and when it is necessary”
