Wa, Sept. 5, GNA- Guinness Ghana Limited, producers of Guinness Stout has contracted farmers in the Nadowli District of the Upper West Region to cultivate 120 hectares of "Kapalla" a new variety of Sorghum as a foundation seed for the production of hops for breweries in the country.

The Zinnenuba Lankano, Upper West Regional Director of Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), who said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Wa on Friday, explained that the move is to reduce importation of hops for breweries in the country and create jobs for farmers in the country.

He said production of the new variety of Sorghum, which is on experimental basis would be extended to other Districts of the Region after a successful trial in Nadowli District.

Mr Lankono said farmers have given the assurance that the yield has got great potentials in the District and called on Guinness Ghana Limited to honour their obligations.

On fishing, Mr Lankono said the ministry is in agreement with two communities that have dams to ban fishing until such time that it would be marketable.

"Right now a pound of fish is between six and eight thousand cedis in the market, and we think it is affordable in the system and so we want those communities to hold on the fishing now." He named the communities as Siiro in the Wa District and Daffiama in the Nadowli District.

The Regional Director predicted bumper harvest for food crops particularly the cereals.
