Special Prosecutor invites DVLA boss over GH¢4 million bribe attempt claim

The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has been invited by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over allegations of bribery.

The bribery allegations follow Kotey’s revelation during an interview with Accra-based Angel FM that he was approached by an individual who offered him an amount of GH¢4 million to halt the rollout of the new Digitalized Vehicle Registration Plate (DP) policy.

According to him, he rejected the monetary offer and asked the individuals to leave.

“… When I started this thing [car registration initiative], let me say that a gentleman called me. I don't even know where that gentleman is from, whether it was a trap or not. He brought GH¢4 million to my office (sic)…

“They came to my office saying that they do not want the DP sticker to be introduced since it would not help them benefit monies in any way. They know they are stealing from the county. They brought cash, and my security can attest to that… I just said I can’t take it,” Kotey revealed.

When asked by the interviewer why he did not report the individuals to the police, Kotey explained that escalating the matter could have further damaged the image of the DVLA, adding that the institution was already suffering from a negative public perception.

The OSP has, therefore, invited him for questioning to assist the agency in its efforts to obtain further information to verify and identify those who allegedly made the bribery offer.
