Stock index jumps up on huge Standard Bank gain

Accra, Aug. 20, GNA - A big gain by Standard Chartered Bank, the second best performer of the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), pushed the bourse up by 29.13 points, one of the biggest in recent times, as banking stocks continued their good run.

The GSE All-Share Index, the main stock index, ended higher at 5,463.99 points from 5,434.86 points.

Shares that changed hands were, however, a low 64,000 from 9.291 million last Friday when Ecobank Transnational Incorporated alone sold 7.391 million and Ghana Commercial Bank sold 1.742 million shares. Change for the year was 9.15 per cent from Friday's 8.57 per cent. There were three price changes, all positive.

Standard Chartered Bank gained GH=A2 1.00000 at GH=A2 20.0000, SG-SSB Bank gained GH=A2 0.0006 at GH=A2 0.9266 and Ghana Commercial Bank was GH=A2 0.0005 GH at GH=A20.7505.

Market capitalization was GH=A2 11,650.59 million from GH=A2 11,632.78 million.
