Accra, May 2, GNA - Mechanics and artisans at Suame Magazine on Friday appealed to the Government to provide them with the necessary technical support to enable them to put to judicious use the 24 million-dollar grant from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The funds, they said, should help to provide facilities that would assist them to come out of their old ways of engineering. Odeneho Nana Oppong-Mensah, Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Branch of the Ghana National Association of Garages, said this when he led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on President John Agyekum Kufuor at the Castle, Osu. They were there to express appreciation to the Government for the grant and other interventions including access roads and electricity to enhance their operation. Odeneho Oppong-Mensah spoke of plans to set up a model workshop for diagnosing vehicle faults.

They were there to express appreciation to the Government for the grant and other interventions including access roads and electricity to enhance their operation. Odeneho Oppong-Mensah spoke of plans to set up a model workshop for diagnosing vehicle faults. "In order to remain relevant and to keep ourselves in business we need to move away from the hammer and screw driver. We have to acquire scientific skills to fit into the technological age," he said. Meanwhile, they have been negotiating to acquire land in the Kwabre District to re-locate some of the garages and ease the congestion at Suame. President Kufuor assured them that the Government would continue to give every needed support and encouragement for the private sector to thrive to drive the economy and create jobs. He commended the mechanics for their ingenuity and services and said this stood them out in the West African sub-Region. The result has been that vehicles are brought in from neighbouring Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger for servicing.
