The scrapping of the COVID-19 Levy takes effect on January 2026
The Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) has commended the government for scrapping the COVID-19 levy, which is set to take effect in January 2026.
In a statement issued on December 15, 2025, the group described the move by President John Dramani Mahama as the fulfillment of a campaign promise and a step toward easing the financial burden on traders, businesses, importers, and consumers.
TAGG noted that the removal of the levy signals a broader shift toward transparent policies aimed at attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) and driving sustainable economic growth.
“We recognise this move as a testament to the government’s commitment to stabilising the economy for traders, business operators, and importers. The removal of this levy underscores the administration’s integrity and responsiveness to the needs of Ghanaian entrepreneurs,” the statement said.

The group further urged the government to build on the policy by introducing additional reforms. It emphasised that harmonising benchmark values at the ports would help reduce costs and enhance transparency.
TAGG also expressed optimism about the government’s continued efforts to position Ghana as a hub for trade and investment.
