Tema, Jan 30, GNA - The Management of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has acquired a large tract of land far away from the refinery to build a parking lot for tan ker drivers and cooked food sellers who operate close to the plant.

Presently, the tanker drivers park outside the main gate of the refinery and move inside for their fuel allocation while food sellers operate across the street.

Building the parking lot is among measures taken to check undesirables whose activities pose security risk to the refinery, Captain Edward Kofie (RTD), the Security Services Manager of TOR, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Monday.

The parking lot, which will have modern facilities such as resting places and a restaurant, can accommodate about 200 tanker drivers. Other measures include the felling of trees along the six- and-a-half-kilometre fuel pipe line, erection of sign posts to warn the public that the TOR premises is a restricted area.

Capt Kofie said at the moment TOR educate food sellers to go about their activities with outmost care to avoid fire outbreak while the drivers are given periodic counselling.

Asked whether companies operating around the refinery do not pose security risk to the Refinery in view fact that they deal in chemicals, Captain Kofie said mindful of that, they educate those involved in their operation and monitor their activities.

He said when there is fire outbreak in any near-by company TOR firemen assist to prevent the fire from spreading.
