TUC calls on workers to comply with coronavirus restriction

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Monday called on workers to comply with the restriction of movement of persons in Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi regions, as announced by the President of the Republic of Ghana on Friday, March 27.

In statement signed by the TUC General-Secretary, Dr Anthony Yaw Baah and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, the union appealed to all workers in the restricted zones who were not exempted to stay at home with their families.

“Remember that it is your civic duty to stay at home to protect yourself and others from infection. Do not go out unless you need to attend to something really urgent.

“Do not visit anyone and do not allow anyone to visit you during the period of restriction of movement,” the statement said.

It said workers must continue to observe all the enhanced hygienic procedures of hand washing with soap under running water, use of hand sanitizers, keeping the distance from others and helping their family especially children to observe these hygienic procedures.

“All workers who are at the frontline of this war against COVID-19, with special reference to health workers, please note that our lives are in your hands. You are the heroes and heroines of this war. We are counting on you to take care of us,” the TUC stated.

The statement however noted that, the health workers also have the right to be protected and as such they must ensure that they had all the Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) they need to perform their duties.

“You should endeavour to use the PPE’s that will be supplied to you at all times. Please note that PPEs are not provided to give you comfort. They are to protect you, your family, your friends and those who need your care from infection,” the statement said.

The TUC urged all workers in the other regions not affected by these restrictions on movement, not to entertain any false sense of safety. “We are all at risk. Please continue to practice the enhanced hygiene procedures”.

It entreated the Police, the Army and all other security agencies who would be involved in the enforcement of the restriction on movement to do so professionally, as they had the responsibility to protect people, and not to maltreat anyone.
