TUC to sue partner of Italian who chained Ghanaian worker

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) says it is considering legal action against the Managing Director of Gateway logistics limited in Takoradi for allowing its Italian supervisor, Manlio Maggiorotto to leave the country after chaining a Ghanaian employee.

The Italian supervisor Manlio Maggiorotto accused the Ghanaian employee Ibrahim Sanou of loitering during working hours and chained him to a container, leaving him to the mercy of the weather.

Again, he accused the employee for consistently leaving work. The situation triggered protests from the workers who demanded that the supervisor be arrested.

The Italian supervisor has since left country a week after the Trades Union Congress issued a statement demanding justice for the employee.

That notwithstanding, the TUC says, it will drag the managing director of the company to court for allowing the supervisor to escape. Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, Dr. Kofi Asamoah spoke exclusively to TV3's Labour Correspondent, Daniel Opoku where he indicated that "what we are considering doing may also include the legal perspective of the issues but right now what we are dealing with that the employer is made to answer a lot of things.”

Dr. Kofi Asamoah underscored the need for workers to fight for their rights adding that “the employer cannot say he doesn’t know about the labour law and the employer cannot know that humans are not treated this way. If he as an employer, we put chain around his neck and drag him, would he be ok with that?”

He further indicated that “the laws are clear and people need to respect the laws of the land. Workers should insist on their rights.”
