Ghana’s landlocked neighbours would very soon be using the Takoradi Port for their shipments, raking in more revenue for the country. The Takoradi port, which is the nation’s second seaport, has been run down by years of neglect but government hopes that a 10-billion cedi facelift project will put the harbour in shape for the expected increase in traffic.
Transport and Communications Minister Felix Owusu believes the port could generate a lot of traffic from neighbouring land-docked countries once an interim plan of renovation and dredging of the berth is done. He said the Tema harbour is currently congested because it handles additional shipments, which should have been handled at the Takoradi port.
He said companies like the Ghana Cement Works as well as bauxite and manganese exporters stand to benefit largely from a refurbished port. Mr. Owusu Agyapong says a vigorous marketing strategy would be employed to aggressively promote the port once the interim remedial work is completed.
