Cape Coast, Oct. 30, GNA- The Managing Director of Taysec Construction Limited, Mr Andrews Holmes, on Thursday presented a cheque for 100,000 dollars to the University of Cape Coast (UCC), as his company's contribution to the UCC's endowment fund.
The University set up the fund towards the establishment of a chair of 'Environmental Sciences', at the Faculty of Science.
Mr Holmes said as a construction firm, his company had a responsibility to contribute to minimising the adverse environmental impact of its operations, hence the donation.
According to him, the threat of desertification, and the growing menace of non-decomposable materials such as plastics, are challenges that environmental scientists need to continue to research and find solutions to.
Mr Holmes said it was imperative to develop a culture in which protection of the environment should be a common objective, shared between contractor, client, suppliers and the communities within which they operate.
Mr Holmes expressed satisfaction that a full academic chair would be available at the UCC, where Taysec and other companies whose work impact on the environment, would be able to seek and receive expert advise.
Receiving the cheque, the Vice-Chancellor of the UCC, Rev. Professor Emmanuel Adow Obeng, commended the company for the donation. Rev. Prof. Obeng suggested that to encourage industries to get into partnership with the universities, incentives such as tax relief must be provided for firms, which support such institutions.
