Tema Shipyard workers petition Mahama over ECO

Aggrieved members of the Senior Staff Association (SSA) and Junior Staff Association of Maritime and Dockworkers Union (MDU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of PSC Tema Shipyard Limited have petitioned President John Dramani Mahama over what describe as the “gross mismanagement” of the company by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Ahmed Ali Tunde, and the board members.

Apart from that, the workers also appealed to President Dramani Mahama to, as a matter of urgency, ensure the immediate reinstatement of the two senior officers, Mr. Samuel Ayensu and Mr. Stephen Tetteh Quaye, whose appointments were terminated for no apparent reason.

In a petition dated Tuesday, May 24, 2016 and signed by both the acting Chairman and Secretary of SSA, Mr. David E. Doomson and Mr. Christian Dogbey respectively, which was chanced upon by Today, the workers reiterated their call for the removal of Mr. Tunde.

Copies of the petition, Today discovered, were sent to the Chief of Staff, Minister and Chief Director of the Transport Ministry, General Secretary of TUC and the board chairman of PSC Tema Shipyard Limited.

According to them, the reminder has become necessary as a result of delays by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Fifi Fiavi Kwettey, who assured them that he would impress upon President Dramani Mahama to relieve Mr. Tunde of his post, and also dissolve the board as well.

The workers drew President Dramani Mahama’s attention to the fact that their earlier petition to the transport ministry has not been given the needed attention, hence their resolve to call on him this time around.

They also accused Mr. Tunde of mismanaging the company's resources which they claimed has led to its collapse.

They workers further accused Mr. Tunde of misappropriating funds of the company meant to improve their working conditions.

They claimed in the petition that salary increment has not been forthcoming, a situation they described as “unfortunate.”
