Textile workers are threatening to picket this week if government does not stop the influx of imported textiles.

The Trades ministry had earlier promised a June 30 deadline to come out with guidelines to regulate the importation of textiles into the Ghana.

The Ministry had on many occasions intervened to stop the traders from demonstrating with a promise to implement guidelines that will regulate the importation of textiles into the country.

The dealers said the unbridled importation of textiles into the country was doing great harm to the local textile industry and since imported textiles were cheap, they sold faster thereby throwing most of the textile dealers out of business. But government is yet to fulfill its promise despite the June 30 deadline which has expired.

The workers say government has not shown enough commitment in fighting the piracy of textiles. General Secretary of the Federation of Labour, Abraham Koomson said they will go ahead to picket if nothing happens indicating that government must deal decisively with the cheap importation menace.
