There is no looming power crisis - VRA Plant Manager

The Plant Manager at the Aboadze Thermal Power Plant, which is being operated by the Volta River Authority (VRA), Stephen Owusu, says there are no indications that Ghana will be returning to the period of power crisis soon as it has been speculated by the Institute of Energy Security (IES).

According to him, Ghana, currently, has excess power as compared to the period when electricity demand by consumers outstripped supply, leading to load shedding.

Ghanaians experienced power crisis which was christened 'dumsor' between 2012 and 2015, but the situation started easing prior to the General Elections in December 2016.

Power supply in the country has been stabilised for sometime now. In addition, consumers are also enjoying between 10 and 30 percent reduction in electricity tariffs.

However, last week, the Institute of Energy Security warned that the country could return to the dark days as a result of ECG's inability to settle GHC957 million it owes the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).

But speaking to Oman FM, Mr Owusu stated that there is no cause for alarm.

In his view, the country is nowhere close to power crisis but was quick to add that "we should put in more efforts to ensure that nothing untoward happens."
