Ghana’s Tigo Cash has been adjudged the "Best Mobile Money Product in West Africa" at the 2013 Kalahari Awards in Lagos, Nigeria.

The award ceremony took place during the 3rd Mobile Money Expo in Lagos Nigeria recently.

The award is given to organisations that have made significant contribution to the mobile financial sector and are poised to change the market landscape in the near future.

Mobile Money was one of eight categories of awards, and Tigo Cash emerged top because of its uniqueness among its core competitive base.

Tigo Cash competed against several mobile money products from telecom operators, independent mobile money operators and banks across the sub-region.

A statement from Tigo Ghana said Tigo Cash stood out because it is accessible to anyone on any network, and in 2011, the platform was used to pay over 600 claims on the company’s award-winning insurance scheme, Tigo's Family Care Insurance.

As of last year, about 30% of Tigo Ghana’s subscribers are registered on The Tigo Cash, and about 13% of them were active users of the service. The platform floated an estimated GHC11 million every day, and it recorded almost a million transactions every month.

Head of Mobile Financial Services at Tigo Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh received the award on behalf of Tigo Ghana.

He said: "We are excited to have been recognised as The Best Mobile Money Product in West Africa.”

Adadevoh applauded the excellent Tigo Cash team members who have worked so hard to make the product the market choice in Ghana, and dedicated the award to the loyal customers of Tigo Cash for their confidence in the product, which made it possible.

“For us at Tigo Cash, this is really just the beginning and we promise you our valued customers several more innovations throughout 2013," he said.

Meanwhile Tigo Cash has taken several steps recently to ensure that its innovations result in adoption and usage by customers.

In December 2012, Tigo Cash's most loyal customers were rewarded with hampers loaded with Tigo Cash goodies and some Tigo Cash to spend on their friends and loved ones.

The company said several of its Tigo Cash agents have also confirmed that they have grown in business. Two of those agents are Moru Ishawu, a Tigo Cash Agent in Daboya, and Gertrude Fosu of Gadisco Business Centre, Accra Newtown.
