Beposo market traders want new market

The executives of the Beposo Market Traders Association have appealed to the Shama District Assembly to build a market for traders to enable them to expand their businesses.

Making the appeal during a meeting with senior officials of the Assembly at Shama the traders led by the market queen, Mrs. Mabel Woode, said the market was congested, thus making business unattractive. The meeting was organized by Mrs. Victoria Araba Dennis a consultant of the Beposo Market Traders Association.

The traders said modern facilities at the market would not only ease congestion but would also boost their businesses. They said the market, which serves about 20 communities in the district on market days, lacked decent sanitary facilities and convenient places to discharge their wares.

The traders appealed to the Assembly to ensure strict supervision during rehabilitation of the market to avoid shoddy work and fraudulent deals by contractors.

Mr. Vincent Mawuli Wordi, the District Budget Analyst, appealed to the traders to insist on taking tickets from toll collectors after paying their levies to enable the Assembly to generate revenue for development.

Mr. Wordi said revenue generated from markets in the district between January and September was GHC12, 516.40, of which Beposo market alone collected GHC8, 135.60, representing 65 percent. He expressed regret that revenue fell below target as GHC18, 000 was collected from traders within the same period in 2012.

He said the Assembly had taken stringent measures such as recruitment of collectors to assist the substantive revenue collectors to step up revenue generation in the district.

Mr. Frank Yeboah, Deputy Co-ordinating Director, indicated that while the Assembly would urgently address the issue of sanitation, the traders must also adhere strictly to environmental cleanliness in the market.

He advised them against colluding with revenue collectors to defraud the Assembly, since such negative attitude affected development.
