Tigo retains CSR Ghana Telecom Award of the Year

For its outstanding work in education, Tigo has been adjudged CSR Telecom Company of the Year at the prestigious Ghana CSR Excellence Awards, held at the La Palm Royal Beach hotel on 9th November 2015.

This is the second time this year that Tigo has picked up ‘CSR Telecom Company of the Year’, the first was at the Ghana Telecom Awards in April 2015.

Commenting on the award, the Director for Corporate Communications & CSR, Gifty Bingley, said, “We are honored for being recognized in this special way; for our commitment to Sustainability and development. At Tigo, Corporate Social Responsibility is integrated into our business operating model, and for us CSR is not an afterthought, or something we do at the end of the year just to tick a box.”

We believe education holds the key to breaking the chains of poverty and bringing development to the communities around us and the country as a whole.”

Tigo’s flagship CSR project, Shelter 4 Education has made waves in the media since it was launched earlier this year. The company undertook renovation and construction projects for debilitated school buildings in deprived communities across the country including Obeng Yaw Basic school in Adeiso in the Eastern Region, Tupaa Basic School in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, St Joseph Basic School in Obuasi of the Ashanti Region, Ehiawoanwu Basic School in Ejura of the Ashanti Region, The African Faith Primary School in Banda Ahenkro in the Brong Ahafo Region and Dimabi L/A Basic School in the Northern Region.

Each school also received learning materials for the students, a headmaster’s office, staff common room and public place of convenience. Shelter 4 Education has brought relief and hope to tens of thousands of children, teachers and communities.

The awards night also included speeches by the President of the Association of Ghanaian Industries, Mr. James Asare-Adjei and Country Director for Care International, Ambassador Elkanah Odembo.

Both speakers highlighted the importance of CSR in building a sustainable business model, and urged companies in the country to not only think about their products, services and customers, but ways to positively impact the community and larger environment they operate in.

The occasion was graced with the presence of the country’s finest industry giants across telecoms, banking, FMCG, manufacturing and non-profit organizations.
