Millicom Ghana Limited, operators of mobile network, Tigo, have extended a lifeline support to ‘Tech needs Girls’, a social entrepreneurship programme aimed at introducing and encouraging young girls to pursue various courses in ICT.
In an impressive familiarization tour to their training centre in Nima, a surburb of Accra, the Chief Executive of Tigo Ghana, Roshi Motman, the Head of Corporate Communications and Corporate Responsibility, Gifty Bingley and the visiting Head of the Millicom Foundation, Till Behnke, were full of commendation for the programme.
Roshi Motman was delighted about the young girls’ enthusiasm in computer programming and reiterated Tigo’s continuous support to ensuring the project remains successful.
The Head of the Millicom Foundation, Till Behnke, said the objectives of ‘Tech needs Girls’ syncs perfectly into the overall objective of the Millicom Foundation, “innovative solutions that use digital and mobile technology to solve social challenges.”
The support to ‘Tech need Girls’ is being channelled through Soronko Solutions whose founder, Regina Agyare, has since January 2014 been a Tigo Reach for Change Ambassador. The Tigo Reach for Change programme is a social entrepreneurship initiative that identifies and offers support to people leading change and innovation across Ghana.
‘Tech needs Girls’ was founded by Regina and her friend, Rasheeda Yehuza, both software developers. Their Nima centre is a collaboration with Achievers Book Club and together, they cater for over 250 young girls in the Nima-Maamobi community.
‘Tech needs Girls’ is a social enterprise project that uses technology to unearth and drive potentials among young women with the aim of mentoring and empowering them to lead and innovate.
