Any traveler would love to explore the world without the hassle of applying for visas just to gain access to certain countries. That’s why people aspire to own passports that are considered powerful.

These strong passports are seen as golden keys that unlock borders, offering the freedom to roam the world and access a wide range of opportunities.

For those who may have missed out on international opportunities themselves, many strive to secure a better future for their children by connecting them to these “great” nations, so they can enjoy the benefits of holding a strong passport.

From the United States to the United Kingdom, many people view these countries as desirable destinations.

However, the latest Henley Passport Index, sighted by GhanaWeb Business, shows a decline in the strength of the American passport, which now ranks 10th in the world.

Currently, US citizens can travel visa-free to 182 countries.

In January 2025, the US ranked 9th, down from the number one position a decade ago.

Leading the rankings now are Asian countries; Singapore, Japan, and South Korea.

Singapore holds the top spot as the world’s most powerful passport, granting visa-free access to 193 out of 227 global destinations.

Japan and South Korea follow in second place, each offering visa-free access to 190 destinations.

European Union member states, including Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain, occupy third place alongside Finland, with visa-free access to 189 destinations.

The index is compiled using exclusive Timatic data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and ranks passports by the number of countries their holders can visit without needing a visa in advance.
