The Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has cautioned commercial drivers against charging illegal fares, especially during rush hours, warning that those who ignore approved rates will face disciplinary action.

His caution comes amid growing frustration from passengers in major urban centres who say some drivers are taking advantage of heavy traffic to demand inflated fares.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on December 10, 2025, the Saboba MP disclosed that a national taskforce had been constituted to curb fare abuses and ensure strict adherence to transport regulations.

He urged passengers to report drivers who engaged in such practices so that swift measures could be taken.

As part of efforts to ease congestion and improve commuting during the busy festive season, the government has started deploying extra buses on selected routes beginning Wednesday December 10, 2025.

Nikpe also hinted at upcoming reforms in the transport sector, noting that soon only drivers registered under recognised unions would be allowed to operate commercially; a step he said will help professionalise and better regulate public transport operations.
